SUMMARY FOR CHAP 7- RADIO
After the war,corporate America saw radio's potential like RCA .Radio seen as wireless telegraphy and a few thought of broadcasting to wide audience like David Sarnoff who thinks that his new invention would beoome a radio music box.Later,Frank Conrad began broadcasting from his garage.The station,KDKA,signed on in 1920 and is still on air,making it the country's oldest station.In response,RCA,GE,ATT along with many other companies and organization started radio station.Radio found its role as a broadcast medium.Before 1926,radios were bulky,filled with tubes and batteries,and hard to tune.Between 1925 -1930,17 million radio sets were solid.Early broadcasters were stores,newspapers,schools,businesses,and not broadcasting companies.Besides that,networks allows stations to share program content like cut costs.It also allows advertisers to reach larger audience.The first network was NBC.Depression was a problem in year 1930- 1940 where radio fared well .Federal Communications Commission created in 1934 that regulated all electronic communicators.During depression,people wanted diversion and escape.well during world war 2 radio thrived as ad revenues increased.NBC divested itself of one network .I also learned about the growth and stabilization in year 1955 till the late 90s,where number of stations more than doubled.Payola is where record producers bribed DJs to play certain music.National Public Radio begins ,grows to 160 affiliated stations by 1980.Telecommunication Act of 1996.Talk become hottest AM format.Competition from satellite radio,internet radio,ipods.Radio stations slowly entered the digital age,but they may be speding up.Example web sites.The early radio station web sites simply streamed broadcast content and now sites contain additional information and services.Stations also use web sites to generate revenue.High Definition Radio improves signal quality of terrestrial radio stations.Satellite radio in order catogerized into 2 radios which are XM radio and Sirius radio.Then they also have internet radio where traditional broadcasters stream signals on internet and the last in the mobile radio that usually found in cell phones.User-Generated Content like podcasting where recording an audio program and making it available for download.We can also see the ownership in the radio industry where the Telecommunication Act of 1996.In putting together a program there are 3 formats which are music,talk and all -news.In economics wise,radio is cheap to produce and distribute and it lends to target marketing.Last but not least the radio audience contains 575 million radio sets in US,average person had radio on 3 hours daily.As people age,they prefer different formats.
